The Roads Summer Student is responsible to assist departmental staff in a variety of tasks in the performance of their responsibilities.   

Compensation and Work Term
$17.85 - $19.34 per hour
May to August, 40 hours per week

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or currently enrolled in High school or post-secondary education.
  • Similar work experience preferred, including ability to perform physical labour outdoors for long periods of time.
Responsibilities
  • Assist employees with duties involving physical labour related to the Roads maintenance, such as, but not limited to, ditch cleaning and cutting of grass, cutting and trimming trees, preparing the ground and seeding grass, debris and garbage pick up, loading and unloading vehicles, digging/shoveling, raking, moving materials, installing and repairing signs and guide rails and related activities.
  • Assist employees with duties involving physical labour related to maintenance and repair of Public Works assets such as, but not limited to, sewers (sanitary and storm), water mains, piping installation, repair and maintenance of culverts, assisting with water main, water valve, water service and fire hydrant maintenance requirements and related activities (duties performed must be those which can be completed by a non-licensed water distribution operator).
  • Assist employees with duties involving physical labour related to maintenance and repair of Public Works assets such as, but not limited to, bridge and sidewalk repair, street patching, road repair, jack-hammering, pot hole filling and related activities.
  • Assist as required with administrative tasks which may include filing, cataloguing, sorting and related office work.
  • Adhere to high standards of ethical behaviour and demonstrate understanding that their personal actions impact the public’s perception of the Municipality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Roads or designate.

Other.
  • Valid and satisfactory ‘G2’ or ‘G’ license
  • Valid and satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.
  • Regular work outdoors with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
  • Heavy physical labour involving lifting, pushing and pulling of weight up to and sometimes over 40Kg.
  • Regular operation of machinery involving noise, fumes and exposure to vehicle fluids.
