The Destination Development Coordinator (“DDC”) is responsible for coordinating consultation / engagement activities and communications to enhance the Municipality of Port Hope’s (“Municipality”) tourism’s offerings and visibility as a destination of choice. The DDC works closely with the Economic Development Officer, other municipal departments, and community partners to implement the Municipality’s Tourism/Destination Strategy, support product and experience development and develop a tourism economy that aligns with the values of the community. 

The DDC is a key “doer” role in a small team: delivers hands-on destination activation work such as experience development with operators, partner coordination, and content-driven marketing execution. This role manages the tourism content calendar, produces professional graphic design assets, runs day-to-day social media, supports wayfinding and placemaking initiatives, coordinates a tourism ambassador program, and reports monthly on performance and strategy implementation progress.

Compensation
$58,603 - $68,557 per annum (compensation is currently under review)

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Tourism, Business, Advertising, Marketing or related field. 
  • Two (2) to three (3) years’ work-related experience. Minimum of 1 years’ experience in marketing and promotion for municipal tourism, a tourism attraction or cultural facility would be considered an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. 
  • Understanding of the local, regional, provincial, national and international tourism landscape. 
  • Experience and understanding of content creation, social media management and the production of marketing materials. 
  • Experience with project management and managing budgets. 
  • Knowledge of the municipal decision-making process and familiarity with the Ontario Municipal Act, MAT regulations, and tourism sector funding programs. 
Responsibilities
  • Support Tourism/Destination Strategy implementation: annual workplan, coordinating internal inputs, initiative tracking, partner roles, issues documentation, milestone reporting.

  • Facilitate experience and product development with operators/partners (itineraries, packages, shoulder-season activations, themed weekends). 
  • Coordinate the development of a tourism ambassador program and visitor information service throughout the municipality.  
  • Coordinate co-marketing with partners (regional tourism partners, BIA/Chamber, operators) and maintain tourism partner records and engagement logs, track contributions and results. 
  • Coordinate the development, design and production of advertising and marketing materials, such as producing graphic design assets (print and digital): posters, social graphics, visitor one-pagers, partner toolkits, simple signage drafts.  
  • Build and manage content calendars (annual/seasonal and weekly), aligned to strategy priorities and partner events. Manage social media channels day-to-day: scheduling, community management, response standards, escalation, and content capture coordination. 
  • Gather basic visitor insights (pulse checks, event feedback, operator input) and convert into actionable improvements. 
  • Support event promotion and visitor communications in collaboration with partners and municipal communications (within established approval processes). 
  • Coordinate the tourism/destination communication strategy and tourism website content with the Communications division to optimize communication opportunities and to promote business development and community brand messaging.  Ensure that communication materials are developed in accordance with the branding guidelines and protocols of the Municipality. 
  • Maintain files of relevant resource materials, partner and operator records and confidential agreements for tourism development.  
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager, Economic Development or designate. 
Skills and Experience
  • Excellent verbal communication skills including courtesy, tact, discretion, explanation, interpretation, negotiation, judgment, persuasion, and presentation skills.  
  • Excellent written communication skills including flexible writing style to meet the varied requirements of the work and medium being used; ability to write clear, concise messages and edit content, structure and spelling with high degree of quality and accuracy.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, CRM tools, and social media management platforms (Meta Business Suite, Scheduling software, Canva, etc.). 
  • Organization and time management skills, including ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure. 
  • High degree of professionalism, political astuteness and interpersonal skills. 
Other
  • Valid and satisfactory ‘G’ driver’s license and access to own vehicle. 
  • Valid and satisfactory Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check.
  • Office environment with some requirement to work hours outside of normal schedule.
